I’m coming out

Today is National Coming Out (Oot in Scotland) Day in the UK.

My name’s Jamie and I am gay. I came out when I was 16. I remember being terrified at coming out to some people and fine to others. I think I made more of a deal of it than it was. Being gay is a huge part of my life and yet it’s also a small part.

I’ve never experienced discrimination and I feel lucky for that. I’ve never been called a faggot or hurt for being who I am but there are those that have and that needs to stop. Being gay is not a choice any more than being straight is.

We are wired the same as you, our blood looks just like yours and contrary to some people’s opinions we aren’t “different”. We come in many shapes and sizes. You might not know some of us and some of us might be so obvious you want them to be a little less so.

Each and every one of us is a human being and deserves the same rights and respect afforded everyone else.

DADT banned

I’m delighted to see this happen but I don’t dare to hope that Obama’s administration won’t appeal it in the hope it’ll give them a better chance in the midterms. If it does stay overturned I wonder how many people discharged will go back? Are they even allowed?
